Aim
To enable the student to apply a range of mathematical techniques to the solution of engineering problems
Learning Outcome At the completion of the module the student should be able to:
· Solve a pair of simultaneous equations.
· Solve engineering problems which involve the use of trigonometric identities
· Use differential calculus to solve engineering problems.
· Use integral calculus to solve engineering problemsApply the algebra of matrices and determinants to the solution of simultaneous equations. Apply complex numbers to the solution of engineering problems. Indicative Content Drawing graphs. Use of algebra to solve simultaneous equations. Selection and use of trigonometric identities. Cosine and sine curves, amplitude and wavelength.. Differentiation of simple algebraic and trigonometric functions. The product rule. Maxima and minima. Points of inflexion. Curve sketching. Definite integrals. Integrating functions. Determination of the area beneath curves. Introduction to differential equations. Matrices and determinants. Complex numbers, De Moivre`s theorem.
