Aim :

To give a broad based introduction to electrical engineering science.

Learning Outcome Learning Goals:

At the completion of the module the student should be able to:

· Analyse a composite magnetic circuit
· Analyse a.c. series and parallel circuits
· Analyse the resonant condition in series and parallel circuits
· Determine the power in a.c. circuits

Indicative Content Analyse the resonant condition in series and parallel circuits, phasor diagrams. Derivation of equations for resonant frequency. Calculation of instantaneous, active, reactive and apparent power. Calculation of power factor for single phase, series and parallel circuits. Analysis of problems involving power factor correction.

Saturation, coercivity and remanance, the hysterisis loop. Eddy current losses. Practical magnetic circuits, e.g. transformers, motors, solenoids. relays etc. Practical inductors, the effect of component values on the Q-factor and shape of the frequency response characteristic. Practical examples including radio and TV receivers.
